01 Let's start with the conclusion: not all clumps are useless.
Many people mistakenly think that clumping in PAM means it's ineffective. Actually, clumping ≠ automatic discard. The key points are: how hard the clumps are and whether it has deteriorated or degraded.
Overall rule of thumb: soft clumps can be saved, hard clumps must be thrown away, and anything with discoloration or a weird smell should be tossed immediately.
02 Three Types of Clumping and Corresponding Solutions
✅ Situation 1: Slight Moisture Absorption, Loose Clumps (Still Usable)
Signs:
Breaks apart easily with a gentle squeeze, no hard core, no hard lumps
Color remains pure white, no yellowing or darkening
No strange smell, no sticky or spoiled feel
Cause: It's just simple moisture absorption. The PAM molecular chains are not damaged or degraded, which is physical clumping and does not affect the core performance.
Usage Instructions:
1. Manually rub and sift to break it up and restore a loose state.
2. When dissolving, extend the stirring time and dissolve thoroughly at low speed to avoid fish eyes or clumps.
3. Small-scale comparison: do a beaker test with new material and adjust the amount of additive as needed.
⚠️ Note: Use it as soon as possible after breaking up. It will absorb moisture faster the second time, so long-term storage is not recommended.
⚠️ Situation 2: Clumps are hard, have a solid core, and are seriously compacted (not recommended to use)
Signs:
Can't break it even when squeezing hard; whole clump is compacted, solid inside
Even after breaking, there are still lots of hard pieces
Why can't it be used?
This kind of clumping isn’t just simple moisture absorption; it’s caused by long-term exposure to moisture and compression, which makes the molecular chains clump together and tighten.
Although it looks like solid chunks, when dissolved, it will result in:
A lot of fish eyes and insoluble gels
Uneven dissolution, with a significant drop in effective viscosity
Poor flocculation, slow settling, and sludge that doesn’t dewater properly
Very easy to clog dosing pipes and metering pumps, causing equipment failure
Forcing use will only lead to: more chemical added, poorer results, and increased chemical costs and maintenance hassle.
❌ Scenario 3: Yellowing, browning, strange smell, or expired (should be discarded)
Signs:
Powder changing from pure white to yellow, brown, or dark
Musty, sour, or other abnormal odors
Stored far beyond shelf life, especially cationic PAM over 1 year, anionic over 2 years
Core issue: chemical degradation has already occurred, molecular chains broken, molecular weight reduced, chemicals basically ineffective.
No matter if it’s clumpy or hard, it’s recommended to discard, not use in the machine. Using it can very likely lead to exceeded discharge limits or system failure.
03 Shelf Life of Different Types of PAM – Stop Hoarding Blindly
Many clumps and failures are basically due to storing too long or beyond the expiration.
Cationic PAM: Shelf life around 1 year, most prone to moisture and degradation
Anionic/Non-ionic PAM: Shelf life about 1–2 years, relatively more stable
PAM Solution: Mix and use immediately, maximum 48 hours, older solution becomes ineffective

04 PAM Clumping Safety Operations and Disposal Guidelines
1. Protective Measures: Always wear a mask and gloves when breaking up clumps to avoid inhaling PAM dust or getting it on your skin.
2. No Forceful Crushing: Forcibly crushing hard clumps won’t restore their effectiveness and will just produce a lot of useless dust.
3. Disposal: Severely degraded or hardened PAM should be handled according to general industrial solid waste regulations. Do not throw it away casually or pour it directly into water.
05 Prevent Clumping! Proper Storage of Dry PAM
If you want to avoid wasting chemicals, the key is storage:
Keep the warehouse cool, dry, and ventilated; no outdoor storage
Stack off the ground and away from walls, avoid rain and dampness, keep away from wet floors and water sources
Seal the bag tightly right after opening; store it sealed, never leave it open
